Care & Safety

5. How should I care for my candle?

To get the longest and cleanest burn from your candle, a little care goes a long way:

  • Trim your wick to around 5mm before each burn to prevent soot and ensure an even flame.
  • Let the wax melt all the way to the edges on the first burn. This helps create a smooth, even surface and prevents tunnelling.
  • Burn your candle for 2–4 hours at a time to maximise fragrance throw and extend its life.
  • Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, pets, and children.
  • Never leave your candle unattended, and stop burning once approximately 1 cm of wax remains at the bottom to avoid overheating the glass.

With the right care, your candle will burn evenly, smell beautiful, and fill your space with long-lasting fragrance from start to finish.

6. Why is my candle tunnelling or not burning evenly?

Tunnelling happens when a candle is extinguished before the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar, leaving a ring of unmelted wax around the sides. This can also occur if the wick isn’t trimmed correctly or if the candle is placed in a draughty area.

To prevent tunnelling:

  • On your first burn, always let the wax melt evenly to the edges (this can take 2–4 hours depending on the size of your candle).
  • Keep your wick trimmed to 5 mm before each burn to maintain a steady flame.
  • Avoid burning your candle in areas with strong airflow (like under a fan or near an open window).

To fix tunnelling:

  • Carefully remove any excess wax from the sides of the jar so the wick can burn more freely.
  • You can also use the “foil method”: wrap a piece of aluminium foil around the top of the candle, leaving a small hole in the centre for the flame. Burn the candle for 1–2 hours (the trapped heat will help the wax melt evenly across the surface again).
  • After the wax has levelled out, continue burning as normal and follow proper candle care tips to prevent it happening again.
7. Why does my candle wick have a black ball after burning?

This is called a “mushroom” wick, and it’s completely normal! It happens when the wick is slightly too long or burning at a higher temperature, causing carbon to build up at the tip and form a small bulb or cap.

While harmless, a mushroomed wick can make your candle burn less cleanly and may lead to a larger flame or light soot on the glass. To keep your candle burning beautifully, trim the wick to around 5 mmbefore each burn. This helps maintain an even flame, prevents smoking, and keeps your candle looking its best from start to finish.

8. What should I do with the jar once the candle is finished?

Our jars are designed to be reused and repurposed, perfect for storage, decor, or giving your candle a second life!

To remove any leftover wax, simply fill the jar with boiling water and watch as the remaining wax melts and floats to the surface. Once cooled, you can lift out the solid wax and reuse it in a melt or tealight warmer for a little extra fragrance time.

After cleaning, your jar can be repurposed for storing cotton pads, jewellery, makeup brushes, or even as a mini plant pot (the options are endless!).
